UPDATE: Statistics now says indus output grows 4.6% in Apr, not 4.9%

MOSCOW, May 23 (PRIME) -- Russia’s Federal State Statistics Service has corrected the estimate of industrial output growth in April to 4.6% on the year from 4.9% released earlier, the authority said in a statement on Thursday.

“The Federal State Statistics Service has withdrawn earlier published information about industrial production in January–April 2019. The investigation revealed that one of the production entities in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District provided incorrect data to the local statistics authority,” the service said.

“This resulted in miscalculation of the data on dynamics and amount of natural gas production and of the industrial output index,” the service said.

The service also said that industrial production grew 0.2% on the month in April instead of 0.5% reported earlier and seasonally adjusted industrial production rose 1.2% instead of 1.4%.

The authority is conducting an internal investigation due to the error, it said.

Economic Development Minister Maxim Oreshkin said that data quality is the key task of the statistics service and such mistakes as the April data miscalculation are unacceptable.

“It is obvious that statistics are getting an increasing amount of close, detailed attention from the side of general public and experts, this is why quality data, as I said at a meeting with the Federal State Statistics Service, is the key issue,” the minister said.
